The Office of Communications informs the public about OSMRE’s progress fulfilling SMCRA and provides OSMRE personnel with information, expertise, and resources.
This Office plans, coordinates, produces, distributes, and manages the following under the direction of the Director:
- Fact sheets
- OSMRE Websites
- News releases
- Mine Reclamation Awards
- Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) Requests
- Congressional Inquiries
- Social Media
The Office provides information about OSMRE programs, policies, and activities for use by the public, the coal industry, and citizen groups, among others. In addition, the OC responds to specific requests for information from Congress, the news media, and the public.
The OC also functions as the principal point of contact for scheduling OSMRE briefings with key officials; provides direction for the bureau’s public-facing website; maintains a correspondence tracking system to manage official correspondence; handles Freedom of Information Act requests; coordinates OSMRE’s annual awards recognizing excellence in reclaiming active and abandoned mines, as well as a separate annual award honoring an individual who has made significant contributions to the spirit of SMCRA; and handles certain aspects of internal communications.
