OSM's Abandoned Mine Land Reclamation program concentrates its efforts on problems created by coal mining that impact people's health, safety, and welfare (Priorities 1 and 2). Through September 30, 2006, the States, Indian tribes and OSM had reclaimed $1,736 million of these problems. Because past coal mining and the resulting impacts are concentrated in a few States, close to 60 percent of the reclamation is in three states; West Virginia (21.7%), Pennsylvania (20.1%), and Kentucky (16.7%).
