Environmental Coal Related Problems

(Priority 3)

OSM's Abandoned Mine Land Reclamation program concentrates its efforts on problems created by coal mining that impacts people's health,safety, and welfare (Priorities 1 and 2). It also reclaims environmental problems created by past mining. Through September 30, 2006, the States, Indian Tribes, and OSM had reclaimed $339.4 million of these problems created by past coal mining. Two States, Illinois (50.3%) and Indiana (16.5%) account for almost 70 percent of this reclamation. The Appalachian states have such large inventories of high priority problems (Priority 1 & 2) that they have not been able to reclaim many of their environmental problems.
