Coal Mine Fire
This site is located in Boone County West
Virginia at Peter Cave Fork. A burning coal seam is creating fumes and
flames along an abandoned strip bench. The fire is not located near any
residences, and the only access is by the abandoned strip bench. Although
diminished, the fire continues to burn inside the hill.
Coal Refuse Fire
Peach Creek Refuse Pile, Logan County West
Virginia. This project cost approximately $4.3 million dollars to complete.
It was one of the first projects undertaken in West Virginia (WV0013-FR-A)
after SMCRA passed in 1977. Through a cooperative agreement, the State
was able to extinguish and regrade several acres of burning refuse, and
eliminate a potentially dangerous impoundment.
