Name:
David E. Beam

When did you begin working for OSM?
1979

What locations have you worked, and what did you do?
Virginia full time until 1989 as reclamation specialist and/or program specialist. Kentucky full time since 1989 as program specialist. Temporary duty in West Virginia and Pennsylvania in 1979 Temporary duty in Tennessee in 1981

Looking back, what was your most memorable event(s) while with OSM?
Worked with a lot of fine people over the years. Seems like we remember the worst things though. Like staying at the Logan Motor Lodge in Logan, West Virginia where the tap water ran purple because of the manganese treatment!

Good things? Too many to name, but the one thing that really sticks out in my mind is watching the Clinch River in Virginia evolve from a sediment choked, nearly dead river in 1978 to one of the finest smallmouth bass fisheries in Virginia by 1989. All because we got sediment ponds. The sediment was no loner allowed to reach the stream and the sediment that was there flushing off the bottom. As a result, the benthic life, and therefore the basis of the food chain, came back.

What were the most significant accomplishments you had?
Just getting the industry to comply with the laws and regulations during the first couple of years. We laid a good solid foundation for inspection and enforcement.

Latest work has been compilation of the valley fill inventory for the EIS required by the Haden decision.
