1998 Mid Continent Regional Award: Poffenbarger Reclamation Project, Iowa |
This reclaimed mine site eliminated dangerous highwalls, acidic spoil material, and downstream sedimentation. With reclamation complete much of the site has been returned to productive grazing land.
This tree frog is just one example of the abundant wildlife that now exists in the diverse habitat that was created by the reclamation.
Wetland vegetation was planted in areas contained by the nearby Corp of Engineers Red Rock Reservoir flood pool storage area. This prevents erosion, provides year-around cover, and improves the wildlife habitat.
Wetlands developed during reclamation included mitigation of existing areas and 10 acres of new water bodies. Today the water quality has been improved and the aesthetic quality along the adjacent road blends into the surrounding Iowa landscape.
