               OSM AWARDS ALABAMA $3,807,353 GRANT
                                 
             TO FUND ABANDONED MINE LAND EMERGENCIES

     The Interior Department's Office of Surface Mining
Reclamation and 
Enforcement (OSM)  has awarded Alabama a $3,807,353
grant to fund the State's abandoned mine land emergency
program.  

     The $3,807,353 grant includes $400,000 in current
year money, plus $3,407,353 in funds carried over from
prior year money.

     Funds for AML grants come from fees paid by coal
producers at the 
rate of 35 cents per ton of surface mined coal and 15
cents per ton of coal 
mined underground.
