                     OSM AWARDS HOPI TRIBE $35,000
                       ABANDONED MINE LANDS GRANT
The Interior Department s Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and
Enforcement (OSM) has awarded the Hopi Indian Tribe a $35,000 grant to
assist in funding the tribe s Upper Village of Moenkopi abandoned mine lands
(AML) reclamation project.
Legislation was enacted in 1987 authorizing Indian Tribes to operate their
own AML reclamation programs, while OSM continues to administer the federal
regulatory program for coal mine reclamation on Indian Lands and the AML
fund.
