More and better trees on reclaimed coal mines in Appalachia are goals of the Appalachian Regional Reforestation Initiative Participants will include representatives of : the US Office of Surface Mining; the States of Kentucky, Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia; the coal industry; environmental organizations; land companies; academia; local, State and Federal government agencies; and local citizenry. The broad-based coalition will sign a Statement of Mutual Intent (SMI) that describes the necessary steps to develop the initiative and ensure its success. The ARRI is an initiative to promote the planting of high-value hardwood trees on reclaimed mine lands in Appalachia and to increase the survival and growth rates of those trees.
