Partnership will work to restore trees on mined lands

More and better trees on reclaimed coal mines in Appalachia are goals of the Appalachian Regional Reforestation Initiative

(Roanoke, WV) – Partners of the Appalachian Regional Reforestation Initiative (ARRI) will pledge to promote the planting of high-value hardwood trees on reclaimed coal mines when they meet December 15 in Roanoke, West Virginia.

Participants will include representatives of : the US Office of Surface Mining; the States of Kentucky, Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia; the coal industry; environmental organizations; land companies; academia; local, State and Federal government agencies; and local citizenry.

The broad-based coalition will sign a Statement of Mutual Intent (SMI) that describes the necessary steps to develop the initiative and ensure its success.

The ARRI is an initiative to promote the planting of high-value hardwood trees on reclaimed mine lands in Appalachia and to increase the survival and growth rates of those trees.

The signing is scheduled for December 15, 2004, 2:00 p.m. at the Stonewall Resort, Roanoke, West Virginia.
