OSM Director Pleased with Abandoned Mine Land Fee Extension

(Washington, DC) - President Bush signed the 2005 omnibus appropriations bill on Wednesday, December 8th with a provision extending the Office of Surface Mining's authority to continue collecting Abandoned Mine Land fees. OSM's collection authority is now extended through June 30, 2005.

"We are pleased to have the opportunity to continue AML fee collections through June 30, 2005."

"We are hopeful that this window of opportunity will result in long lasting, reasonable and equitable solutions that will allow us to finish the job and protect the health and safety of those at risk from Abandoned mine sites."

Sec. 135. Amendment of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977. (a) Section 402(b) of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (30 U.S.C. 1236(b)) is amended by striking "September 30, 2004" and inserting "June 30, 2005".
