OSM Celebrates 32nd Anniversary of Surface Mining Law
Acting OSM Director Glenda H. Owens commemorates the recent anniversary of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977. On August 3, 1977, President Jimmy Carter signed the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (SMCRA) into law. Today, OSM takes pride in its many accomplishments over the last 32 years. We have done much to protect citizens and the environment from the adverse effects of surface coal mining activities. OSM has taken the lead in finding innovative ways to regulate coal production, reclaim abandoned and inactive coal mines, and explore new technologies and solutions to old problems. While we reflect on all that OSM has accomplished, however, we also acknowledge that there is still much to do. As OSM positions itself to meet the Nation’s energy challenges of today and tomorrow, it must continue to work with its state and tribal partners to fulfill SMCRA’s promise of a cleaner environment and safer communities.
