Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement Announces Reduced Amount of Payments for Abandoned Mine Lands Due to Congressional Inaction

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U. S. Department of the Interior’s Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSM) today announced the availability of more than $305 million in Abandoned Mine Land (AML) grants to states and tribes—90 percent of the more than $339.4 million available distribute—to eliminate environmental hazards caused by past coal mining. OSM administers the grants in accordance with the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (SMCRA), which requires OSM to make AML funding available to eligible states and tribes.

Fiscal Year 2014 Budget for Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement Strengthens Compliance and Invests in Scientific Studies

(Washington, DC) – President Obama’s proposed $143.1 million in discretionary funding for the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSM) in fiscal year (FY) 2014 focuses funding on improving compliance with coal production laws and reducing federal subsidies to the coal industry. The budget request also provides $1.6 million for scientific studies and proposes changes in mandatory funding to address the most critical needs for reclaiming abandoned coal mine sites.
