What does America’s story look like through the eyes of future scientists and engineers?
On March 12, 2026, OSM Appalachian Region staff brought the Freedom 250 campaign to the STEAM SciTech Day at the Kamin Science Center, joining students, educators, and the public from across the Pittsburgh region for a day of hands-on learning and exploration.
At the OSM table, visitors engaged directly with the three core themes of Freedom 250: America’s Story, America’s Innovation, and America’s Beauty. Each interaction offered a different way to connect with the nation’s past, present, and future.
America’s Story
Through the National Mine Map Repository, attendees explored the history preserved in coal mine maps. A scavenger hunt featuring a 1973 underground mine map from southern West Virginia invited participants to examine the details of mining history.
A map of coal fields across the United States, coal samples, and trivia cards encouraged visitors to test their knowledge and learn how coal has shaped the country’s development. These hands-on activities helped translate historical records into engaging learning moments, reinforcing coal’s role in America’s industrial story.
America Innovates
Technology drew a crowd as OSM’s Uncrewed Aircraft Systems (UAS) program demonstrated how innovation supports field work. A Skydio X10 equipped with a thermal camera streamed real-time imagery to a large monitor, allowing visitors to observe heat differences on the human body.
This interactive experience led to conversations about how UAS technology is used in the field, from data collection to improving safety and efficiency in reclamation work.
America’s Beauty
Discussions focused on OSM’s mission since 1977 and the importance of reclaiming mined lands. Staff highlighted environmental stewardship, collaboration with state programs, and the balance between meeting energy needs and restoring the land.
Coal trivia cards sparked questions that led to deeper conversations about the agency’s role and the long-term impact of its work.
Career Connections
During the Career Connections activity, four staff members met with small groups of middle and high school students. Students asked thoughtful questions about STEM careers, gaining insight into career paths, daily responsibilities, and what motivates professionals working in the field.
